The maker may seem a mystery at first, because the original owner or maker of the piece is not around to tell you about the furniture. While many very old furniture pieces, whether handmade or manufactured, are not marked with the maker’s name, in some cases there are telltale signs indicating both the age and origin of the piece.
A telltale sign of the furniture’s maker is a manufacturing tag, label or stamp bearing the name of the creator. Such a marking or label may have been placed inside a drawer on an old dresser, on the back of a chest of drawers, or on the underside of a chair or sofa seat. Inspect the entire piece for a tag or marking of any sort. In some cases, the label may not be an actual manufacturer name, but the name of a retailer or association, such as Sears, Roebuck and Company, or the Grand Rapids Furniture Makers Guild.
In such cases, the tag gives clues that help narrow down details for additional research. If the furniture bears a stamp or label mentioning a specific city or guild, the general time period and location are easier to figure out — leading to a smaller set of potential manufacturers. Even without a tag, you can determine if a particular style of furniture could have been manufactured in one particular region. A local historical society may be brimming with information about its once-celebrated, now defunct furniture maker or local craftsmen who cranked out wood furniture.
