My baby’s age on the scan report is different to my stage of pregnancy. What does this mean?

One of the most important aspects of obstetrical care is to date, as precisely as possible, the beginning of pregnancy so that the estimated time of arrival ETA can be calculated sometimes referred to as the estimated date of confinement — EDC. And yet, even with all of the available technology, one of the puzzles of modern obstetrics, is that the obstetrician has not yet learned how to accurately date the beginning of a pregnancy. Pregnancy can be measured in two different ways. The most common and most often used in clinical obstetrics is the measurement of the gestational age of the pregnancy. The gestational age of the pregnancy is measured from the first day of the last menstrual period. In this way of dating the pregnancy, the pregnancy is 40 weeks in duration on average instead of the actual 38 weeks. In other words, it dates the pregnancy, on average, two weeks longer than it is. The other way of measuring the dates of the pregnancy is to measure the fetal age.

Crown-rump length

A dating scan is an ultrasound scan to determine how many weeks pregnant you are and your due date. Read on for more information about what a dating scan offers. A dating scan might be recommended before 12 weeks to confirm your due date if you are unsure of your last menstrual period or your date of conception.

Crown-rump length (CRL) is the measurement of the length of human embryos and fetuses Different babies do grow at different rates and thus the gestational age is an approximation. It takes about 14 days from the first day of the last menstrual period for conception to take place and thus for the conceptus to form.

Throughout my pregnancy , I’ve received two different due dates — one came from my very first ultrasound, when my baby was barely the size of a blueberry, the date that was then subsequently stamped on my record as “the” due date. But then there was a second date, the one that showed up on my next couple of ultrasound scans. This date was a few days earlier. It’s also the date that I prefer, not only because I’m now 38 weeks pregnant and ready to get this baby out, but because it matched the date I’d calculated on my own using information I looked up.

And how much does it really matter? After all, as many moms know, due dates are just educated guesses. Traditionally, estimated due dates are calculated by taking the start date of a woman’s last menstrual period and adding a year, subtracting three months and adding seven days, a method known as Naegele’s rule. But that method doesn’t account for irregularities in a woman’s menstrual cycle — if she has a longer or shorter cycle than 28 days or any variability with ovulation, for example.

That’s why the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends doctors use ultrasound measurement in the first trimester to establish an estimated due date. The most accurate way to date a pregnancy is with an ultrasound done between 6 weeks and 8 weeks, 6 days, according to Dr. As a woman’s pregnancy progresses, fetuses develop at different rates, which is why an estimated due date from an ultrasound measurement during the second trimester is less accurate.

And why I probably shouldn’t be taking my second “due date” very seriously. As much as technology has improved, this is all still an imperfect science.

This is a scan or ultrasound which determines your expected date of confinement EDC based on the development of the embryo. The limbs and the yolk sac, though obviously important, are not the primary means of measuring growth.

An average length of the embryo at 7 weeks is anywhere between 5mmmm. The average weight is less than 1 gram. Obviously, every pregnancy is unique and individual factors influence the size of the embryo at this early stage, and the embryo shows development week by week. The ideal time for a sonographer to assess the gestational age in the first trimester is between weeks of pregnancy. This is the period of time which provides the most accurate assessment. Generally, ultrasounds which are performed in the first trimester are within days of being accurate in terms of assessing gestational age.

This is because although every little embryo is unique, there are still defining characteristics of development which apply to all embryos at particular stages of early gestational development. As the embryo matures to a foetus, individual genetics and growth factors influence its growth.
