Graphics are becoming increasingly important for scientists to effectively communicate their findings to broad audiences, but most researchers lack expertise in visual media. We suggest collaboration between scientists and graphic designers as a way forward and discuss the results of a pilot project to test this type of collaboration. The power of these pictures to speak to people, especially those outside our specialized research communities, is worth far more than a thousand words. More sophisticated graphics are required to communicate the results of ever more complex and transdisciplinary research.

There are the huskies on the porch. She intended to become an anaesthesiologist, a choice she made in part because it seemed like a gentle and undramatic sphere of medicine. As the relationship soured, she became more despondent and more stoned. Hoping to communicate in a language the new boy, a musician himself, would understand, she turned some of her personal writing into a song.

She recorded it in a studio nearby and delivered it, a sort-of ode for an audience of one.

Pickup artists PUA , self-identified as dating coaches , the seduction community or the pickup community , is a movement of men whose goal is seduction and sexual success with women. The community exists through Internet newsletters and blogs , marketing e. The rise of “seduction science”, “game”, [2] or “studied charisma” has been attributed to modern forms of dating and social norms between sexes which have developed from a perceived increase in the equality of women in western society and changes to traditional gender roles.

Modern pickup artist practice dates at least to , with the publication of How to Pick Up Girls! However, one self-described “picker-upper of women” preceding Weber was rational emotive psychotherapist Albert Ellis , who wrote The Art of Erotic Seduction , a how-to guide for men that encouraged them to meet women through the “pickup”, with Roger Conway in In , Lewis De Payne, then a student of Jeffries, founded the newsgroup alt. In the late s, Clifford Lee began his Cliff’s List Seduction Letter as a central independent voice of the community.

Other pickup teachers emerged with competing methods, and became known within this community as “seduction gurus” or “gurus”. The community was brought to greater mainstream awareness with the drama film Magnolia , in which Tom Cruise portrayed a charismatic yet embittered and emotionally-troubled pickup guru who was loosely modeled on Ross Jeffries. Within the community, seduction lairs are underground meeting groups for men devoted to the study of obtaining sex taught in the seduction community.

Lairs first began as study groups soon after Ross Jeffries released his first products and began teaching sometime in the early s. Many pickup artists work on their “game” by improving their understanding of psychology, their confidence and self-esteem termed “inner game” , and their social skills and physical appearance physical fitness, fashion sense, grooming “outer game”. Many members of the community believe that one’s “game” is refined through regular practice, [14] with the idea that the abilities needed to interact in this way with women can be improved.

The techniques used by fraudsters in online romance scams are similar to those found in domestic violence cases, according to our research published in the British Journal of Criminology last month. According to the latest figures from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s ScamWatch, that’s up on the same period last year.

The majority of the money lost was from reports of fraudsters using online services including social media, email and the internet. But this is only part of the story. How is it that offenders convince victims to send money? In our latest research , we found the non-violent techniques the romance fraudsters use are similar to those encountered in domestic violence. Their stories are devastating. Psychological abuse has long been recognised as a central part of domestic violence, along with physical and sexual violence.

Despite recent attention to coercive control , we were surprised to learn how little research has been conducted on psychological abuse in the context of domestic violence. Accordingly, we used a classification of psychologically abusive tactics constructed by psychologists in the s to see if the nine major categories of abuse they identified could be applied to romance fraud. Although our interviews came from a larger study that didn’t ask directly about psychological abuse, 16 of the victims in our sample 12 women and four men described eight of the nine types of psychological abuse.

We discuss four examples here. Isolation occurs when offenders interrupt the support networks of their victims.

Of all the manipulative ways to get someone into bed, pickup artistry has to be up at the top of the sleaziness scale. While many of us harbour a general distaste for this, the reason people still flock to read books like The Game is because they believe it works. Professor Viren Swami from Anglia Ruskin University, a leading expert on the psychology of romantic attraction, knows better than the rest of us whether PUA theories are up to scratch.

Professor Swami takes exception to the idea that attraction can be boiled down to scientific theories. Swami tells Metro. At best it is false advertising and at worst the techniques can be harmful.

Valentine’s Day is typically a hard time for many, namely those who object to the commercialised nature and emphasis on public displays of affection, those who are presently single but would rather not be and find the whole ethos of the day offensive, or some combination of the two. But there is a simple solution to both of these problems: date a scientist.

Scientists are highly educated people with decent career prospects, but are also rarely associated with a fondness for romance and passion or any other emotional state so are likely to be apathetic towards Valentine’s Day. Ergo, scientists are the ideal partners. But how does one go about finding, courting and eventually establishing a solid relationship with an elusive and complex scientist?

It’s not easy; they are not like other, more simple humans. But what follows is a brief guide for those wishing to make the attempt to woo a scientist. Scientists can be hard to locate. They rarely frequent sporting events, popular music concerts, fairgrounds, organised cockfights or wherever it is non-scientists choose to congregate.
